The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is one of the three All India Services, alongside the Indian Police Service (IPS) and the Indian Forest Service (IFS). IAS officers hold key administrative positions in the government and are responsible for implementing government policies, running day-to-day administration, and handling civil services. They can serve at various levels, from district administration to central government.

To become an IAS officer, one must pass the Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The process includes three stages:

  • Preliminary Examination: A multiple-choice test to screen candidates.
  • Main Examination: A written test consisting of nine papers, including an essay, general studies, and optional subjects.
  • Interview/Personality Test: A final round to assess the candidate’s personality, communication skills, and suitability for the role.

Candidates need to meet the eligibility criteria, such as age, nationality, and educational qualification.

The eligibility criteria for IAS include:

  • Nationality: Must be an Indian citizen.
  • Age: The candidate must be between 21 and 32 years of age. There are age relaxations for candidates from certain categories like SC/ST (5 years) and OBC (3 years).
  • Educational Qualification: Must have a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university. Final-year students may also apply.
  • Attempts: The number of attempts for the exam is limited: 6 for general category, 9 for OBC, and unlimited for SC/ST (until the age limit is reached).

The salary of an IAS officer varies depending on their rank and experience. However, the basic pay for a new IAS officer starts at around ₹56,100 per month (Pay Band 3, Level 10) as per the 7th Pay Commission. With promotions and seniority, the salary increases, and a senior officer can earn up to ₹2,50,000 or more at the highest level. IAS officers also receive allowances, such as house rent, travel, and medical allowances.

The time taken to become an IAS officer depends on several factors. The preparation time for the UPSC exam can range from 1 to 2 years. After clearing the exams, candidates undergo training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussorie, which typically lasts about 1 year. Therefore, it generally takes 3-4 years from the start of preparation to becoming a fully trained IAS officer.

IAS officers have a broad range of duties, including:

  • Policy Implementation: Implementing government policies at the state or central level.
  • Administrative Roles: Overseeing the functioning of various government departments and ensuring that government schemes reach the public.
  • Public Service: Ensuring the welfare of the people by managing resources and coordinating between government and citizens.
  • District Administration: Managing law and order, revenue, development activities, and coordination in a district.

IAS officers also hold important posts in ministries and departments, contributing to national governance and decision-making.
